| A member of the Iridaceae family, the iris is native to the Meditteranean, but grows just about everywhere, if cultivated. Our Orris Root CO2 extract is grown near Florence, Italy. Only the aged root develops the luscious scent of violets and woods.
The production of Orris Root is lengthy and labor-intensive. Because of this and the limited area in which true Iris pallida is cultivated, the cost of this material has always been high.
The primary constituents of Orris Root are cis and trans-alpha and cis-gamma irones. They give this extract its characteristic woody-violet odor, perfect for perfuming, especially as a fixative. Our CO2 extract is a light amber color and contains 1% irones.
Orris root blends well with other woods, such as cedar and sandalwood, labdanum, cypress and the florals, such as rose, violet and geranium. Use sparingly. |
